The Daily Emerald is a student-run and produced newspaper based in Eugene, Oregon, committed to delivering honest, unbiased journalism. While it operates on the University of Oregon campus, it remains fully independent, giving the newsroom the freedom to report critically on university affairs.

Thousands of free copies are distributed to over 160 locations throughout Eugene each week, reaching a local audience of more than 40,000 readers. Since the redesign, the paper’s return rate has dropped from 30% to 18%, reflecting stronger engagement and wider pickup.

Part 1: Taking charge of the first redesign in 12 years

From the nameplate to the fonts and layout, I was given two weeks to fully redesign the Emerald’s print edition. I reshaped its magazine-like feel into something more rooted in tradition, while still holding onto its playful spark. By leaning into classic newspaper aesthetics, I created a distinct visual identity that stood out in a crowded local media landscape.

Part 2: Joining the team full time as Design Editor

After the redesign, I was brought on full-time as Design Editor to lead the Emerald’s visual direction. I started with a team of three and transformed the desk into a group of nine talented designers. Together, we produce the weekly newspaper, The Daily Emerald, along with a range of seasonal and special-edition publications. It’s been a chance to not only shape the paper’s visual identity, but also mentor emerging designers and build a collaborative, creative team.
